Visiting Pupnat
Pupnat , with its five hundred inhabitants, is situated at the side of the main island road, 13 km from the town of Korčula and is the highest settlement on the island. It is hidden in a valley high up among the mountains so that enemies and pirates from the sea could not discern it.
In the ancient times, the Illyrian lived around Pupnat, in the area of Mocila, where remains of Illyrian graves were found. .
The women from Pupnat used to bring firewood to Korčula, transported on their mules and donkeys. Agriculture is not largely developed as there are no sizeable fields around the village. Today, many men and women from Pupnat work in the Korčula hotels, offices and the shipyard.
Pupnat lays in a valley between high hills and is very pleasant and interesting visitors destination.

- Walk from Pupnat to Racisce village on the north coast
- Walk from Pupnat to the Zukovica valley on the south coast of Korcula Island
- Walk from Pupnat to Zrnovo and Korcula Town
In Pupnat visitors may buy good home made food and wine, prsut, olive oil, brandy, honey, dried herbs and fruit.
The families from Pupnat are the owners of the Kneza bay on the northern coast of the island, with a number of houses and villas rented to tourists. On the south coast, Pupnat families own what are consider to be the most beautiful bays on the island of Korčula: Bačva, Smokova, Pupnatska Luka and Ripna (map)
From Pupnat, the road climbs up to the top of the hill from where a wonderful panorama stretches as far as the island of Mljet to the southeast and the island of Lastovo to south.
From this point the road descends towards the more fertile part of the island and the villages of Čara and Smokvica.
There is a regular bus service that connects Pupnat with Korcula Town and all villages on Island. |
